BEYOND MOTHER TONGUE: A DAUGHTER’S AWAKENING

THE MUSEUM OF ETHNOGRAPHY presents its 11th exhibition entitled BEYOND MOTHER TONGUE: A DAUGHTER’S AWAKENING, running from October 17, 2009 through June 30, 2010. The OPENING RECEPTION will be held on Sat. October 17, 6-9pm. The multimedia installation portrays the story of the daughter (Marya) who witnesses the passage of a parent through the purgatory of the advanced dementia of Alzheimer’s. Memories erupt into an archaeological investigation replete with ancestral altarpieces, memento mori reliquaries honoring a life of ninety years. Accompanying the museum show is a video of taped performances filmed in the lava fields of Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii. While autobiographical, the video and exhibition convey the universal story of all people living with or affected by the insidious disease of Alzheimer’s.

Marya, a performance artist, annually produces exhibitions at her studio/alternative gallery space, THE MUSEUM OF ETHNOGRAPHY, located at 22 South Third Street, 2nd floor Easton, PA. The Museum is open to the public at no charge; hours are Tuesdays and Fridays 11am-4pm, or by appointment, groups welcome. Marya holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Centenary College, Hackettstown New Jersey and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Vermont College, Montpelier Vermont.
