“Outside/Inside the Box” featuring Reading/Berks Fiber Artist Melanie Ritter Mitchell
Melanie Ritter Mitchell, artistic and co-director at the some things looming (www.somethingslooming.com) Fiber Arts Gallery and Studio, 526 Washington St., Reading, was selected to exhibit her work, “Spring!” in the exhibit Outside/Inside the Box, part of the major Fiber Philadelphia 2012 (www.fiberphiladelphia.org) biennial fiber/textile art celebration taking place at various venues in the city.
Outside/Inside the Box showcases innovative fiber/textile art that transcends disciplines and combines historic concepts with contemporary perspectives. This juried exhibition represents 68 artists working in media with fiber/textile reference. More than 500 artists from 15 countries applied with 1,316 pieces of work. Countries represented are Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Sweden,Switzerland, Turkey, the U.K. and the U.S.
The exhibit will be held at the Crane Arts Building, Icebox Project Space, 1400 North American St., Philadelphia, from March 2 to April 15, 2012. Receptions are on Saturday, March 3 and 31, 2012.
“Refuse/re-seen”
some things looming will also be a venue for Fiber Philadelphia 2012 when “Refuse/re-seen” opens on April 14th and runs through June 2. The juror is Warren Seelig, Rockland, Maine, a distinguished visiting professor in the Fibers/Mixed Media program at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts.
Rebekah Ritter, founder and co-director of some things looming, said, “Refuse/re-seen encourages artists working in fiber to become infatuated with the idea of exploring the possibilities of disposable and disregarded stuff as the basis for their submission.
“Our challenge for fiber artists everywhere is to take the most ordinary, non-precious and every day materials and to create the extraordinary . The reuse of every conceivable material is already imbedded in the psyches of many working artists today. This exhibit will require the use of materials which are not durable and are normally considered ephemeral and short lived,” she said.
The deadline to enter Refuse/re-seen is Feb. 25, 2012 and the entry fee is $35. The “Best in Show” winner will receive a $250 award and his or her own show at some things looming during the 2012-2013 exhibit season.
